I facilitated my worst rated session ever last week.

What was interesting for me was that it was a great session from my seat having facilitated over 1,000 sessions. That’s where the insights begin.

I have comparative data.

They don’t, and it was only their second session.

What’s interesting is how disconnected most teams are from the results. When we begin each session, everyone describes what a “10” (on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best) would be in terms of results at the end of the day.

At the end of the session, the team evaluates how we did. Most say all their expectations were met – which was what this team did. Then they proceed to share numbers.

Some are self-proclaimed “tough graders” who believe there is always room for improvement.

The question I think often think to myself is “from whom?”

Many teams evaluate as if they are letting me and/or everyone else know what they think of our performance, exclusive of themselves. They tend to view the results as someone else’s job to produce. As if they are only judging others, it’s not up to them to make it happen.

This is precisely why meetings stink. They only work when we all participate to make them awesome.

My new questions:

Why would anyone want to contribute to any meeting resulting in less than a “10,” and what will you do about it?

There are no results separate from your participation. Refuse to waste time, energy, and money waiting for greatness to happen to you. It won’t.

Without intention, you’re a spectator.
